Abstract In today’s digital world, which is experiencing the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR, also known as Industry 4.0), data from the Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity, mobile devices, businesses, social media, health records, and more is abundant. Proficiency in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in machine learning (ML), is crucial for conducting insightful data analysis and developing the corresponding intelligent and automated applications. In this area of machine learning, a large range of supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised, and reinforcement learning methods may be found. Deep learning, a subset of machine learning technology, can also analyze large amounts of data intelligently. In this work, we present a comprehensive overview of several machine learning techniques that can be applied to enhance the intelligence and capabilities of an application. Therefore, this study’s primary contribution is to explain the principles of various machine learning techniques and how they may be used in a variety of real-world contexts, such as cybersecurity systems, smart cities, healthcare, e-commerce, agriculture, and countless more. We also highlight the challenges and potential directions for future research that our analysis may reveal. This chapter’s major objective is to give decision-makers, researchers, and entrepreneurs a technical point of reference for a range of real-world situations and application domains. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Mangesh M.
