Abstract Internet of Things (IoT) is emergent technology that offers services in many fields including smart homes, smart cities, industry, health, agriculture, surveillance, and security. IoT employs variety of technologies, including sensors, actuators, and cloud to create an interaction between users and their physical world. Hypothetically, in term of interconnected systems every components is susceptibility to vulnerabilities and threats. The fast growth of IoT applications with different devices that are linked to the network generates new risks in privacy preservation and security. Ensuring security and privacy in the Internet of Things is mainly complex and challenging task, especially for devices with constrained-resources such as mobile phones due to the limited energy supply and computing power. In order to ensure secure communication between connecting devices in IoT environment many steps require to be performed including secure access, integrity, information confidentiality, end-to-end authentication, and generation of secret keys. Recently, blockchain technology has been the subject of various studies that aim to improve the security of IoT network. Nevertheless, the highly computational requirements for blockchain-based security methods are frequently not met by the lightweight nature of IoT devices. Therefore, this paper proposes a new lightweight device authentication framework utilizing the emerging distributed ledger technology known as "IOTA Tangle". Moreover, digital assets including cryptographic keys, device data, and seeds are stored in a secure storage inside the IOTA Stronghold vault. IOTA Stronghold provides Ed25519 algorithm for data signatures for authentication purposes. It has the capability of verifying identity of devices and efficiently reduces the cost of such related operations. © 2025 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
