Abstract Internet of Things (IoT) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are two interrelated paradigms that have revolutionized the way we connect and interact with the physical world. IoT encompasses a network of sensors and systems, connected devices that collect and exchange data over the Internet, enabling seamless communication and control. WSNs, on the other hand, focus on networks of small, low-power sensor nodes that wirelessly gather data from the environment. These paradigms converge to create a powerful ecosystem that makes possible real-time data collection, analysis, and decision-making. IoT leverages advancements in connectivity technologies, cloud computing, and data analytics to enable the integration of various devices and systems. The tiny nodes in WSNs are designed to be power-efficient, enabling long-term operation through techniques like energy harvesting and duty cycling. WSNs employ data aggregation and routing algorithms to optimize data transmission and conserve energy. They find applications in various domains, such as environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, smart cities, healthcare, and l disaster management. The integration of IoT and WSNs unlocks new possibilities for real-time monitoring, control, and automation. WSNs act as frontline data collectors, capturing information from the physical world and transmitting it to the IoT infrastructure for further processing. This integration enables timely decision-making, enhanced efficiency, and improved resource management. By combining the power of connectivity, sensors, data analytics, and cloud computing, IoT and WSNs revolutionize industries, create new business models, and pave the way for a more connected and intelligent world. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Shalli Rani and Ashu Taneja; individual chapters, the contributors.
