Abstract In smart cities, the demand for efficient waste management systems has increased in tandem with the city's population. The Internet of Things (IoT) has demonstrated its potential as a solution-oriented technology by enabling the development of intelligent and efficient waste collection and disposal infrastructure. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for municipal waste management in smart cities. It discusses the pros and cons of these systems, as well as their fundamental components, architecture, and functionality. In addition, it includes instructive case studies and future research directions for the subject area. The findings of this paper emphasize the need for waste management technologies based on the Internet of Things to promote clean and sustainable environments in smart cities. © 2023 IEEE.
