Abstract In urban areas with more population, things, such as energy, drinking water, pollution, traffic decongestion, good road conditions, and safety in the construction industry are very important to have control. The Internet of Things with Digital Twins can be used in effective decision making controlling all these issues and making smart cities sustainable. The technologies when linked to information communication technologies, artificial Intelligence, big data, cloud storage, machine learning, and blockchain technology help to store, and analyse the data for better prediction and security. The Internet of Things, Digital Twins should be integrated with Federated Learning to have the support of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for real-time updation of smart city modifications. The Digital Twin implementation needs data that are open, real-time, and quality data with cooperation between government organizations. From the Scientometric analysis, it is observed that there is a research gap between the keywords Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning, Internet of things, Digital Twins, Technology, smart cities, climate, research, university, scientist, and professor. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
