Abstract An Intelligent trash bin system has been found to be an ideal solution for waste management in the present's increasing population. This proposed Intelligent trash bin system monitors trash levels in each bin, as well as to detect the presence of any combustible gases that could be leading to a fire, and then proceeds to send out an alert to concerned authorities. The paper presents a low-cost design of an intelligent trash bin solution. The system is based on an ESP8266 microcontroller board, ultrasonic sensor, and combustible gas sensor. A prototype was built and tested and it shows that the system can measure the trash level and also detect flammable gases and send alert signals to the authorities. © 2023 IEEE.
