Abstract The scope of this research includes not only an analysis of previous research on the use of ITS in smart cities but also the creation of a mathematical model to determine the extent to which ITS has contributed to an improvement in the flow of vehicular traffic. According to the literature review and the mathematical model, ITS has the potential to greatly enhance the sustainability of smart cities by lowering congestion and increasing safety and security. This can be accomplished by improving safety and security measures. When using ITS, there are a number of challenges that must be conquered, including interoperability, data privacy, and cyber security, to name just a few. The findings of this study may be implemented into policy and utilized to direct investments in ITS infrastructure, all of which may contribute to the enhancement of the transport networks in smart cities. © 2023 IEEE.
