Abstract The emergence of smart cities has sparked considerable discussion in recent times. While the utilization of urban data offers numerous advantages, including improved city planning and service delivery, it raises concerns about privacy violations and data misuse. Challenges such as limited opportunities for meaningful consent, privatization of infrastructure and data ownership, and the repurposing of Internet of Things (IoT) derived “big data” underscore the need to balance societal progress with individual privacy protection. This chapter critically examines the intersection of smart cities and data privacy, focusing on legal aspects. Acknowledging the global challenge, the chapter analyses existing legal principles, identifies potential issues and gaps, and emphasizes the importance of cooperation and coordination in policy and legal measures. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Esmat Zaidan, Imad Antoine Ibrahim, and Elie Azar; individual chapters, the contributors.
