Abstract Current demands of smart cities to meet new developments in terms of sustainability, energy, and mobility represent a tough challenge. Big data provides the potential to meet these challenges by insights from a large amount of data, collected by infrastructures and sensors all over the city. However, the gains come at crucial costs with significant issues of privacy policy. In this chapter, we collect German users’ viewpoints on data collection, their willingness to share their data, and the perceived concerns in different usage context of smart cities are assessed. Using empirical methodologies results on public perception are reported in two exemplary fields: (1) automated driving, where citizens have to balance the need for an adaptive smart mobility and the wish to keep privacy. (2) Safety in cities, in which smart technologies are used to prevent and detect crime. The findings contribute to the development of participative communal policy strategies in planning and implementing smart urban technologies. © 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
