Abstract In recent times, the interaction among smart city objects is facilitated by enormous networking and communication technologies. The advancements in technologies have provided a wide range of solutions for communication devices. Devices such as sensors, IoT devices, field elements, and technology such as Machine Learning, Artificial intelligence, and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) applications are implemented to handle the smart cities infrastructure. This fusion of technology with the available resources is the base of smart cities. At the same time, several technologies available provide excellent connectivity but have their flaws due to the coexistence of thousands of devices. In this chapter, we walk through the overview of smart city technologies to understand the potential and scope of communication. Taxonomy is also devised to classify the literature based on emerging and future technologies, network classes, IEEE communication standards, modern communication, objectives, and mode of operations. A comprehensive study of different communication and networking technologies based on essential factors characterizes facilitated communication in the smart city ecosystem. Ultimately, various research challenges, such as mobility management, scalable wireless solutions, interference management, interoperability, and high-energy consumption, are discussed as future research directions. © 2022 selection and editorial matter, Krishna Kumar, Gaurav Saini, Duc Manh Nguyen, Narendra Kumar and Rachna Shah; individual chapters, the contributors.
