Abstract Many organizations utilize the smart city paradigm in major cities all around the world. The goal of this chapter is to define the networking features and needs of smart city applications. It also shows the networking designs of several smart city technologies, including the smart grid, smart home energy management, smart water, and commercial airplane safety. Communication technologies provide connectivity and data transfer between elements in smart city settings, and smart city systems are built on them. According to a new assessment reported from the Department of Transportation in major cities, wireless communication and their ability promotes smart-city-enabled technologies. To facilitate the effective exchange of messages among the many components of the systems that deliver specific services, smart city services require dependable and strong networking and communication infrastructures. Smart city services are built at various sizes, requiring a variety of networking technologies for deployment and operations. The communication and network challenges of smart city systems are examined in this chapter. It also looks at networking technologies, topologies, and the communication needs of such systems. © 2023 selection and editorial matter, Ambar Bajpai and Arun Balodi; individual chapters, the contributors.
