Abstract The emergence of smart cities has profoundly transformed the discipline of urban planning, placing special focus on advancements in the domains of economy, ecology, as well as technology. The capture of mobile spatial data is the key component in this process, since it plays a vital role in establishing accurate geodatabases. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the use of mobile applications for field surveying and the creation of a 2D geodatabase in Kirkuk City, Iraq. The study integrates many geospatial technologies, including geographic information systems (GIS), geospatial data collection, and data analytics, to enhance the advancement of smart cities. This study conducts a comparative analysis of manual and automated techniques for extracting building footprints. The authors explore two distinct approaches for creating footprint extraction: an automated method and a manual digitizing method using computer software. The study highlights the advantages and drawbacks of each method. The findings underscore the necessity of integrating human experience with automated technologies to guarantee the precision and comprehensiveness of geodatabases. This study provides valuable insights into the incorporation of geospatial technology in the planning of smart cities and emphasizing the potential benefits of enhanced 3D modeling in future developments. © 2024 Author(s).
