Abstract One aspect of older people that has received little consideration is the mobility safety challenge faced by older people. Therefore, municipalities are still faced with limitations in understanding the mobility safety demands of older people, both those with and without disabilities, in society. An important goal is to provide mobility safety for older people. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the use of emerging technologies and universal design measures to improve the safe walkability and wayfinding of older people. Data were collected from the literature subsequently, meta-analysis and qualitative content analysis were employed to present the findings from the secondary sources. This review study contributes to the body of knowledge by exploring how universal design measures and the use of emerging technologies can promote safe mobility for the improved welfare and well-being of older people towards secure, independent living and societal participation in smart cities. More importantly, this article provides implications for the re-design and development of safe walkability and wayfinding requirements for older people in smart cities. Furthermore, this study reviews older people’s safety requirements in public transportation, mobility safety behaviour and measures to mitigate risks faced during walking, which is lacking in the literature. Finally, recommendations are provided to support older people's mobility by suggesting the adoption of emerging technologies, such as assistive devices, routeing and navigation tools. © 2025 The Author(s).
