Abstract Public space and living conditions determine the possible activity of an older person outside the household. They also influence the possibility of living in the current milieu and impact the quality and comfort of life. The use of ICT solutions both for built environment (BE) and at home of an older person may affect their safety, their sense of security, and overall quality of life. These conditions increase their impact on urban design and management with the growing challenge of an aging society. Against this background, the problem analyzed in the following chapter is the use of information and communication technology (ICT) to cope with aging in the urban environment. Both BE and household conditions and solutions will be explored, to propose an optimal smart city model for societal needs. The methods used in this study include literature review, mostly used to set research questions and hypothesis, and in-depth interviews. The latter method allowed authors to verify the role of identified factors in creating an age-friendly smart city in three areas, i.e., policymaking, future vision of cities, and necessary actions. The analysis brought results that can be grouped as policy instruments, best practices; and success and failure factors in building urban environments that are supporting and inclusive to all demographics. Implications allowed to create a series of recommendations for the use of smartification and digitalization in responding to the challenge of aging. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Anna Visvizi and Hanna Godlewska-Majkowska; individual chapters, the contributors.
