Abstract The problem of traffic congestion in cities has increased to an alarming level and are a routine now. Such type of congested road traffic has resulted in not only the environmental pollution, time wastage, and property damage but also human lives. In order to tackle such problems, one of the major goals of the developing countries is to build smart cities. Traffic system is considered one of the most visible initiatives in smart cities. Building smart cities will help in handling congestion problems, accident situations and the average waiting time for vehicles on the roads. In this article, we propose a smart traffic system based on SUMO that allows rerouting of an emergency vehicle in case of traffic jam. The results show an improved travel time along with lesser impact on environmental pollution. © 2019 Chinese Automation and Computing Society in the UK-CACSUK.
