Abstract Traffic congestion is a significant challenge faced by urban areas globally, including Kochi, India. The Edachira - Brahmapuram Road in Kochi experiences severe congestion during peak hours, leading to delays, increased travel times, and environmental pollution. This studyaims to analyze traffic congestion on this route and propose effective management strategies using Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) software. The study involves collecting real-time traffic data, including vehicle counts, speeds, and congestion patterns on the Edachira- Brahmapuram Road. Using SUMO, a microscopic traffic simulation tool, various scenarios will be modelled to understand the underlying causes of congestion and evaluate the effectiveness of different management strategies. The proposed management strategies may include optimizing traffic signal timings, introducing public transportation enhancements, and encouraging alternative modes of transportation such as cycling and walking. This study contributes to the ongoing efforts in developing sustainable transportation systems and smart city initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for urban residents. © 2025 Author(s).
