Abstract Smart Cities are today seen as one of the most promoted solutions for making the globe a more habitable place through environmental and energy sustainability. Many cities have already made progress toward the objective of becoming smart cities, they have implemented modern technology such as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in nearly every element of city life, with a strong emphasis on maintaining the ecological balance in cities and so Internet of Things (IoT) is the foundational technology for constructing a smart cities framework. Though it is not difficult for developed countries to build practical plans and obtain results for smart cities utilizing IoT, cities in developing countries are still struggling to embrace technologies such as IoT due to numerous constraints. So, in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), improve the quality of city life, and reduce environmental catastrophes in South Asian (SA) developing countries, feasible structural and strategic planning with timely implementation is required so that smart cities projects become successful, particularly with the help of IoT as the basic structure of the cities. This paper's research provides a review and analysis of IoT-enabled smart cities, as well as the primary constraints and necessary procedures to address them in SA developing countries. © 2022 IEEE.
