Abstract The global attention on waste management has intensified due to its widespread repercussions. The intricacies of waste management involve a series of processes where even the slightest misstep can trigger detrimental effects on the ecosystem. While past incidents within landfills and waste management facilities have served as cautionary tales, recent accidents have garnered significant public and regulatory attention owing to their severe and enduring ecological consequences. A notable incident occurred recently at the Brahmapuram waste dumping site in Kochi, Kerala, India, resulting in a massive fire that raged for almost two weeks, causing extensive air pollution and significant environmental and public health concerns within the local community. This paper seeks to address the unique challenges faced in this region and propose effective solutions to prevent such incidents in the future. We introduce an IoT and GIS-enabled waste land monitoring architecture aimed at establishing a comprehensive monitoring system for the designated study area. Furthermore, the paper delves into practical implementation by discussing a prototype of the proposed monitoring system, elucidating its real-time data integration capabilities that enable dynamic mapping and visualization. This feature empowers smart city management with a comprehensive overview and surveillance of the waste disposal site. © 2024 IEEE.
