Abstract Over the past decade, the Natal Smart City Initiative has implemented various complex solutions to enhance urban living through innovative technologies. Despite this extensive experience, the initiative has not previously undertaken the task of selecting a large-scale real application and modifying its communication protocol to evaluate the resulting impacts. This paper describes an evaluation where the communication protocol for an application has been changed, aiming to analyze its impacts and provide insights into the effectiveness and efficiency of different communication strategies in a large-scale real-world scenario. The study focuses on both synchronous (REST, gRPC) and asynchronous (MQTT, AMQP) communication protocols, offering valuable insights for optimizing communication strategies in future smart city projects.
Author Keywords communication patterns; synchronous; asynchronous; smart cities.
