Abstract The primary objective of the system is to ensure a comprehensive monitoring of vehicle movement within the checkpoint premises. This is achieved by utilizing unique license plates assigned to each vehicle. A camera installed at the entry point captures the license plate of every incoming vehicle, with the gathered data processed by the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) algorithm. By incorporating ANPR technology, the system significantly strengthens security and management operations by enabling rapid identification of license plates. Vital information, such as the vehicle number, specific features, and timestamps for entry and exit, is then securely stored in a designated database. Furthermore, the database plays a crucial role in cross-referencing the license plates of any suspicious vehicles, thereby facilitating real-time tracking. This feature greatly contributes to enforcing stringent anti-smuggling measures, allowing for the swift identification and interception of any vehicles arousing suspicion. The automated nature of this process sets the proposed Vehicle Registration and Management System, which utilizes number plate recognition at the checkpoint, apart from the traditional manual investigation methods. This automated approach is more efficient and effective in combating smuggling activities, ensuring a higher level of security within the checkpoint premises. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2024.
