Abstract The fast growth of intelligent urban areas necessitates the effective administration of resources and infrastructure. The implementation of wireless sensor network (WSN) for a variety of uses, including energy distribution, traffic control, and environmental monitoring, is one of the crucial elements. In order to advance the lifetime and performance of WSNs in smart city various application, this learning inspects the use of energy-effectual bunching methods. The evaluation of the effectiveness of the “Adaptive Threshold Residual Energy Efficient Clustering Protocol (ATREEN)”, against low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH) and Power-Efficient Gathering in Sensor Information Systems (PEGASIS) clustering using measures like energy usage and the numeral of active nodes over time is simulated for the comparative results. The performance of ATREEN is measured in terms of network lifetime, with metrics such as First Dead Node (FDN), Half Dead Node (HDN), and Last Dead Node (LDN). ATREEN extends the network lifetime by 127.3% compared to LEACH and extends the network lifetime by approximately 31.0% compared to PEGASIS. The effectiveness and durability of WSNs (wired sensor networks) that enable applications in smart cities might be greatly increased by incorporating the ATREEN protocol into already-existing smart city infrastructures. ATREEN is a good fit for the sensor-intensive environment of smart cities owing to its cluster-based design, data aggregation, and adaptive energy management. © 2024 IEEE.
