Abstract Emphasizing the importance of electric vehicles (EVs) in smart cities, this chapter provides information about various types of EVs based on their level of autonomous. It explains internet of things (IoT) technology and its relation with EVs. The chapter focuses on high penetration of EVs in cities and their impact on the power system, and explains the influences on electricity demand and their role in demand response programs. Connected and autonomous vehicles and especially connected and autonomous electric vehicles (CAEVs) have attracted attentions in automotive industries. IoT can be exploited for CAEVs to improve safety issues and automated driving. The chapter introduces security problems of IoEV communications and underlines their influence on the Urban Platform for Connected Electric Vehicles system. It discusses optimal state estimation while the IoT sensing data is under cyberattack. This discussion includes how state estimation operation can withstand cyberattacks and which control scheme can be employed to adjust the system states. © 2022 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
