Abstract Digital twin (DT) was born at the beginning to design high-precision digital simulation models of spacecraft, and after 2010, with the advancement of artificial intelligence, big data analysis, virtual reality and other technologies, DT has entered a new stage of development, and the application scenarios and functions continue to develop towards medium and large-scale models. As an important means of efficient management of smart cities, DT technology provides innovative solutions for urban planning and development. In this paper, we discuss the development of DT technology and its application progress in smart cities, and illustrate its important role and advantages in real-time monitoring and prediction, emergency response and risk management, environmental protection and sustainable development in the field of smart cities. Through case studies, we further demonstrate that DT technology helps urban planners optimize urban planning and traffic management, enhances risk assessment functions, promotes resource optimization and environmental protection, and provides technical support for smart city development. An objective synopsis is given in terms of the technology and application of the future trends of smart cities and DTs. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
