Abstract This article explores the integration of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) within the framework of sustainable development in smart cities. The study aims to identify the challenges and opportunities presented by the adoption of ITS in urban environments. Emphasizing the importance of innovative transportation solutions, this research contributes to the current discourse by highlighting the role of ITS in enhancing urban mobility, reducing environmental impacts, and promoting energy efficiency. The novelty of this work lies in its comprehensive analysis of the interaction between ITS and sustainable urban development, providing insights into policy implications and technological advancements. The findings reveal that while ITS offers significant potential for improving transportation efficiency and sustainability, it also faces challenges such as data privacy, infrastructure costs, and the need for interagency collaboration. The practical value of this research is demonstrated through case studies and best practices, offering a roadmap for cities aiming to implement ITS in a way that aligns with sustainability goals. Future research directions are suggested to address the identified challenges and to further optimize ITS integration in smart cities.
