Abstract The concept of smart cities has the potential to revolutionise city life with the advent of 5G networks and the IoT. This article examines the potential integration of 5G and IoT technology into future urban planning to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and people' quality of life. A comprehensive system requires the integration of intelligent transportation, energy management, healthcare, and urban planning. Issues related to cybersecurity, infrastructure needs, and regulatory frameworks are also comprehensively analyzed. This research sheds light on the socioeconomic impacts of smart cities through theoretical analysis and case studies. Smart cities comprise several benefits such as enhanced public services, heightened economic competitiveness, and improved resource allocation efficiency. Subsequently, the study explores the effects of the growth of smart cities on privacy, data governance, and digital inclusion. Ultimately, the integration of 5G with the Internet of Things has the potential to significantly revolutionize urban environments, enhancing their sustain ability, resilience, and inclusivity. Connectivity provides cities with the chance to promote innovation, engage stakeholders, and create a fairer and more enj oyable community in the digital age. © 2024 IEEE.
