Abstract Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and the Internet of Things (IoT) together present before unheard-of possibilities and difficulties in maintaining data integrity and authentication inside these systems. The application of blockchain technology as a distributed and strong answer to solve these problems is investigated in this work. By means of a thorough investigation of current developments, this article assesses blockchain-based architectures meant to improve security, lower latency, and guarantee data integrity in WSN-IoT systems. We suggest a thorough assessment of several blockchain technologies and their implementation in practical situations stressing its possibilities in industrial IoT, smart cities, healthcare, and smart homes. Though problems including scalability and energy consumption still exist, our results imply that blockchain integration greatly enhances data security and system efficiency. © 2024 IEEE.
