Abstract Smart wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have gained widespread application across various domains, including environmental monitoring, industrial automation, healthcare, and smart cities. These networks consist of a multitude of sensor nodes that collect and transmit data to central processing units for analysis and decision-making. However, ensuring the integrity, security, and trustworthiness of the data generated and transmitted by WSNs remains a critical challenge. This chapter highlights the integration of blockchain technology into smart WSNs to address these challenges. Blockchain, a decentralized and tamper-proof ledger system, has shown great promise in enhancing data security, transparency, and trust in various applications. In the context of WSNs, blockchain technology offers several key advantages. Firstly, blockchain ensures data immutability and tamper resistance, making it difficult for malicious actors to alter or corrupt sensor data. This characteristic is essential in critical applications where data accuracy is paramount. Secondly, blockchain provides a secure and decentralized framework for managing cryptographic keys and identity verification, mitigating the risk of unauthorized access and data breaches. Thirdly, blockchain supports smart contracts, which can automate and enforce predefined rules and conditions for data transactions within the WSN. This chapter provides information about efficient, transparent, and trustless data exchange among sensor nodes. Furthermore, the decentralized nature of blockchain can enhance the reliability and fault tolerance of WSNs. In case of node failures or network disruptions, the distributed ledger ensures data redundancy and availability. Hence, all such essential topics are discussed in this chapter. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
