Abstract The propagation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and generation of huge data of smart municipalities have given rise to critical concerns regarding data security and integrity. This chapter delves into the emerging paradigm of utilizing blockchain technology to enhance data security and ensure the integrity of IoT-generated big data in smart city environments. Blockchain’s inherent features, such as decentralization, immutability, and cryptographic hashing, provide a robust framework for addressing the vulnerabilities associated with data breaches and tampering. The study explores the combination of blockchain and IoT-Big Data systems to establish a secure and transparent data management ecosystem. By utilizing blockchain’s distributed ledger and consensus mechanisms, the authenticity and lineage of IoT-generated data are safeguarded throughout its lifecycle. This chapter examines various blockchain-enabled security mechanisms, such as access control, data provenance, and consensus algorithms, to bolster data protection in smart cities. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Arun Kumar Rana, Sudeshna Chakraborty, Pallavi Goel, Sumit Kumar Rana, and Ahmed A.
