Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) is a transformative technology that connects physical devices, vehicles, buildings, and other items embedded with sensors, software, and network connectivity. This interconnected ecosystem enables these objects to collect and exchange data, leading to increased efficiency, automation, and innovation across various sectors. This paper explores the diverse applications and use cases of IoT, focusing on key areas such as healthcare, smart cities, industrial automation, and agriculture. In healthcare, IoT facilitates remote patient monitoring and smart medical devices, enhancing patient care and operational efficiency. Smart cities leverage IoT for intelligent transportation systems and environmental monitoring, improving urban living standards. Industrial automation benefits from IoT through smart manufacturing and predictive maintenance, optimizing production processes. In agriculture, IoT applications such as precision farming and livestock monitoring lead to better resource management and increased productivity. The paper also discusses the potential benefits, challenges, and future directions of IoT adoption, emphasizing the need for robust security measures, standardized protocols, and continuous innovation to fully harness its potential and a case study, with promising results, is also discussed using IoT in agriculture. © 2024 IEEE.
