Abstract The road to successful 6G networks is paved with numerous technological challenges that need to be surmounted, such as terahertz (THz) communications, M-MIMO, massive IoT, AI empowred IoT applications, and many other important and still undeveloped innovative technologies. The realization of many of these research areas is being supported by basic sciences, making them active and intriguing research topics. According to fast-evolving AI-capable IoTs, 6G will have a significant impact on how AI-empowered IoT capable services are delivered and how they can transform the demand for and deployment of future 6G networks. In this paper, a comprehensive review of competing technology candidates in 6G networks supporting AI-empowered IoT applications is presented, underscoring how 6G will revolutionize delivery deployment of AI-driven IoT services, thereby obliterating current 5G landscapes. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
