Abstract The advancement in technology, rapid economic growth and a snowballing population has led to a significant increase in energy consumption globally. The transformation of conventional grid into smart grid where power generation, transmission and distribution are managed intelligently and through a bi-directional automation system is a massive step towards sustainable development. With this transformation, the energy management system becomes essential in order to maintain the resilience of the smart grid. Buildings alone are the dominant contributors to energy consumption worldwide. This paper comprehensively describes the most significant research made in the field of building energy management systems incorporating Internet of things and other intelligent techniques. Further, an analytical approach to implement building energy management system with its detailed architecture is also presented in order to understand the pattern between energy consumption and user preference along with the future scope of research direction. This paper also presents an overview of an intelligent occupancy based approach to control LED lighting systems without causing any trouble to the user. © 2022 IEEE.
