Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) envisions the interconnectivity of infrastructure and devices toward greater capabilities and services. The IoT allows for the distributed collection and analysis of data about real-world events, leading to improved efficiency, decision-making in diverse applications such as smart cities, industries, health, and homes. As a result, environmental monitoring is a critical research pathway to support advancements in core industries like agriculture and transportation. To achieve widespread adoption, there is a need for low-cost, distributed, long-lasting components, capabilities and protocols to carry out monitoring. This study aims to support such critical further work through the conduction of a comprehensive review of the application of wireless technologies to environmental monitoring and analysis to guide toward fruitful pathways. Finally, the implementation of a proof-of-concept LoRa mesh network testbed for image data is detailed, and challenges and future research are addressed. © 2024 International Association for Computer Information Systems.
