Abstract The urgent need to address climate change and achieve carbon neutrality has driven cities worldwide to explore innovative approaches to energy production and urban sustainability. The global urgency to mitigate climate change and transition towards a sustainable, carbon–neutral future has propelled cities to explore innovative solutions that not only reduce carbon emissions but also enhance the overall quality of urban life. The integration of wind and solar renewable energy sources into the heart of smart cities stands as a potent solution to address the persistent challenge of greenhouse gas emissions. Wind energy harnesses the kinetic energy of the wind to generate clean electricity through wind turbines, while solar energy captures the abundant energy from the sun using photovoltaic panels. These renewable sources, when harmoniously integrated into urban settings, offer an unprecedented opportunity to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, minimize carbon emissions, and significantly contribute to the global agenda of carbon neutrality. The IoT technology with renewable energy sources like wind and solar power is paving the way for a day when cities will stand as models of sustainability, carbon neutrality, and higher living standards. This study highlights the significance of adopting multidimensional solutions that harness the power of renewable energy and cutting-edge technology to build a green, sustainable, and peaceful urban future as cities continue to face the problems of urbanization and environmental deterioration. This chapter explores how smart cities may become carbon neutral and more sustainable by utilizing renewable energy sources like solar and wind in combination with the Internet of Things (IoT). The benefits, drawbacks, and potential of such a comprehensive strategy are examined in this chapter, along with useful case studies that demonstrate the concept’s practicality. It highlights how important it is to use a variety of approaches to create a sustainable and green future. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
