Abstract The advent of intelligent systems, encompassing artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), the Internet of Things (IoT), and robotics, marks a revolutionary shift in technology and its application across diverse fields. The chapter begins by elucidating the foundational concepts and evolution of intelligent systems, highlighting the transformative impact of AI and ML in areas such as smart cities and robotics and automation. It further explores the pivotal role of IoT in connecting physical devices to the internet, thereby enabling smart cities, health care, manufacturing, agriculture, and many other fields. Despite their vast potential, the implementation of intelligent systems is fraught with significant challenges. These include concerns related to data privacy and security, ethical dilemmas, interoperability issues, economics, and social and cultural issues. Addressing data privacy and security is crucial, as the massive data collected by intelligent systems are vulnerable to cyberattacks. Ethical considerations, particularly in AI decision-making, demand transparency, fairness, and accountability. Moreover, achieving seamless interoperability requires standardized protocols and communication frameworks, while substantial infrastructure investments are essential for scalability and sustainability. The chapter also identifies the immense opportunities presented by intelligent systems, such as driving innovation, fostering economic growth, and improving quality of life. The future of intelligent systems lies in their continued evolution and integration, driven by ongoing research and development. Collaboration between academia, industry, and government will be pivotal in overcoming implementation challenges and maximizing the benefits of these technologies. By navigating the complexities of intelligent system implementation, this chapter aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted landscape, offering insights into the future trajectory of these transformative technologies. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Samsul Ariffin Abdul Karim and Aslina Baharum.
