Abstract In recent years, smart cities have been transforming the way people interact with services thanks to the technological advances in wireless networks, cloud computing and sensors. In this contextm Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) are considered as one of the novel technologies that will revolutionize smart cities even further in the coming years. In fact, its use has been continuously growing to reach a wide variety of civilian, commercial, and military applications. In particular, 5G UASs have been gaining popularity within industry major players including retailers and cellular providers thanks to the numerous advantages 5G brings to UAS operations. Despite these attractive features, there are some considerable setbacks that are holding further development in this field. First, there is no global consensus on a unified communication protocol that the growing number of UASs should use. Second, there is a lack of adequate regulations that would help streamline the operations and safety of UASs. Third, there is lack of mechanisms to detect and thwart cyber-attacks targeting UASs. In this paper, we propose UASChainSec, a framework that enables UASs to exchange information in a secure way by leveraging blockchains and 5G communication. UASChainSec abstracts away the burden to define a new protocol for UAS communication by using blockchains. It also solves the cryptographic key distribution in the presence of growing number of drones. Finally, it has the potential to thwart common cyber attacks threatening the operations of UASs. We support our findings by describing the details of the blockchain-based approach and by evaluating the potential of using blockchains to secure UAS communication. © 2023 IEEE.
