Abstract Accessibility is an important indicator for smart city development. The high accessibility performance makes any form of transportation system generally accepted and actively adopted by travelers. However, known as a crucial element in coordinating the transportation and land use, most research does not consider the road accessibility and its interactive relationship between spatial factors at block level. Taking Algiers as a case study, this research characterized urban morphology in six accessibility types. The result indicates single frontage with interval accounts for over half of the main urban district (48.7%), while the single frontage with lane accounts for the smallest portion (4.2%). Double frontage and single frontage are likely to be the ideal apparatus for smart city construction at block level. New blocks may mostly follow the types of single frontage with interval and direct access with limited interior circulation as a method to meet sustainability standards. This paper provides an innovative method in investigating dynamics of existing urban transportation. © 2022 SPIE
