Abstract Previous research has shown that the increasing attention on commuting methods includes infrastructure, accessibility, user behavior, interpretive environments, personal stories, and important life events. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research on active mobility in the built environment, especially in terms of exploring the methodological aspects. Therefore, in this research, we want to expand the gap where active mobility in the built environment can reach outer parameter of the studies. This study aims to increase the understanding on how the methodological aspect focusing on active mobility as a means to enhance accessibility through creative urban design and development in historic district. This study employed an exploratory review of 646 articles retrieved from four big databases adapting PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) procedures. The exploratory review on more than two hundred articles about mode and route preferences, pedestrian, travel behavior, social function, and moving and encouragement strategies presented an underlying finding showing that city’s infrastructure and connections play a crucial role in shaping a new approach. Among the prominent approaches are designing a smart city, sustainable design, fifteen-minutes walkable city, creative design, pedestrian-cyclists shared spaces, and non-motorized transport mode. The results showed that four prominent analysis techniques were identified: cluster analysis, trend analysis, thematic analysis, and comparative analysis. In conclusion, the article also suggests that the study on active mobility appears in four main research disciplines: city/urban planning, landscape architecture, urban and transportation, and psychology and health. © 2025 Common Ground Research Networks.
