Abstract Wireless communication systems that incorporate AI and machine learning algorithms to transmit information, data, and voice are referred to as intelligent communication technologies. These technologies enhance the intelligence of communication systems, leading to quick and precise decision-making, real-time processing, and the ability to adapt to changing situations. This paper highlights the trends in the field of communication technology and wireless communication. It covers various aspects such as the use cases, advantages, and potential for improvements in various industries. The paper also delves into how different trends can be integrated effectively to achieve the best outcomes. The analyzed trends include 5G technology, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and edge computing. Although it is difficult to determine which of these trends is growing the fastest, it can be argued that AI and ML, as well as edge computing, are growing at a rapid pace driven by the increasing demand for more intelligent and automated systems, and more distributed and low latency computing systems, respectively. On the other hand, 5G technology and IoT are also growing at a fast pace, driven by the increasing demand for higher bandwidth and lower latency in mobile networks and the growing number of connected devices and IoT applications in various industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, and smart cities. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Indrasen Singh, Shubham Tayal, Niraj Pratap Singh, Vijay Shanker Tripathi, and Ghanshyam Singh; individual chapters, the contributors.
