Abstract Connected and automated mobility systems can revolutionize the movement of both people and goods. Numerous studies call for the rapid adoption of connected and automated vehicle technologies that will be capable of improving safety significantly and supporting the unprecedented future demand. Several global smart city initiatives have shown that cities prosper when infrastructures are connected seamlessly. Interconnections of information systems are now occurring in ways never previously imagined, with potentially dramatic outcomes. Growing demand due to population and economic growth, coupled with a lack of adequate transportation policies and investment, are overwhelming transportation systems. Without substantial technological progress supported by policy and investments, the transportation systems will face a “drifting toward gridlock” scenario, as it is already the case in many major urban centers around the world. In this chapter, we first present an overview of connected and automated mobility systems, including connected and automated vehicles, transportation infrastructure, transportation data, and several brief field reports. Second, we have presented policies and guidance on safety, communication, cooperative driving automation, cybersecurity and privacy, and navigation systems (GPS/GNSS) for connected and automated mobility. Third, we have covered policies for connected and automated mobility services and parking and land use. Finally, legislation and public perception are presented for improving user acceptance for new technologies such as connected and automated mobility systems. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
