Abstract New approaches for improving the mobility, accessibility, and safety in dense urban networks are beginning to challenge conventional approaches to transportation system design and operation and change planning processes. This chapter discusses key new technologies, their expected impacts, and methodologies for their assessment. Emphasis is given to the emerging technologies for vehicles, infrastructure, and their interactions, including but are not limited to infrastructure and mobile based real-time monitoring and control systems, connected vehicles, and automation. The chapter assesses the opportunities and constraints for implementation of these systems, and proposes ways for integrating these systems with land use and environmental plans. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.
