Abstract Global urbanization trends and pressing issues around sustainability pose great challenges for cities. The smart city concept has been developed as a strategy for dealing with sustainability challenges by collecting data and connecting systems and increasingly relying on the use of information and communication technology to meet the needs of their citizens. India has recently committed to the development and construction of 100 smart cities to meet the demands of its rapidly growing and urbanizing population. This chapter explores the story of the smart city of Pune by investigating the smart city concept that can be used for transforming any city into a smart city. Citizens engagement and urban planning were key elements of the approach taken by the city of Pune to become smart in various areas, such as traffic management and empowering the youth. Sustaining to remain a smart city faces severe challenges. © 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
