Abstract The study provides a basic literature review of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used in developing smart transportation systems for cities. transport systems are evolving to prioritize sustainability by integrating advanced technologies and innovative approaches. Efforts to reduce CO emissions include transitioning to electric transports, utilizing renewable energy sources, and adopting policies like urban densification and improved public transport networks. Technologies such as IoT, Big Data, and AI enhance real-time traffic management, predict mobility patterns, and optimize transport networks, while Intelligent Transport Systems reduce congestion, support autonomous vehicles, and facilitate multimodal transport. Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platforms, powered by AI, combine various transport modes into a single digital solution, offering personalized and sustainable mobility options while minimizing congestion and emissions. These innovations collectively transform urban mobility into more efficient, accessible, and environmentally friendly systems. This article also touches some of the limitations and challenges related to AI in transportation that previous researches has faced, such as the need for transparency, privacy concerns, and development cost. © 2025 IEEE.
