Abstract Smart environment, as part of a smart city, aims to achieve responsible and sustainable environmental governance. Smart environments offer an alternative to the challenges of pollution on economic growth in an area or city. Although many studies have focused on this topic, scientific information on the latest developments in smart environments is still limited. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the evaluation of the topic of smart environment in the last five years (2017–2021). It systematically reviewed 506 documents using bibliometric analysis through VOSviewer software based on the Scopus database. Furthermore, it visually demonstrated a comprehensive analysis of the field relating to smart environment in publications, as well as the most contributions of studies, institutions, and countries. A cluster analysis from a co-occurrence smart environment was provided. The current work’s bibliometric analysis provided a valuable and seminal reference for future academics and practitioners in smart environment study community. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
