Abstract This bibliometric study explores the academic research on urban development, sustainability, and smart cities. It analyzes articles published from 2013 to 2023 and finds a growing interest in these areas. Research output has increased significantly, indicating a need for innovative and sustainable urban solutions. Using co-citation and co-occurrence network analysis, the study identifies dominant themes and shows a shift from traditional urban planning to contemporary sustainability and technological innovation. Italy is emerging as a leading contributor, with significant contributions from Brazil, China, and the UK. The results provide a comprehensive understanding of these research areas and offer valuable insights for stakeholders, including industry-academic partnerships, in creating sustainable and smart urban environments in the future. © 2024 by IGI Global.
