Abstract The Brazilian intelligent cities are in the beginning phase, and some cases such as Mossoro, Buzios, Curitiba, and Porto Alegre can be evidenced in the local literature. The aim of this chapter is to propose a discussion about smart cities in Brazil from a literature review on the topic. For that, local and regional publications were analyzed and identified an alignment of Brazilian research on the area, with an international context. It concluded that national research on smart cities is in an embryonic stage in academic studies, permeating and interdisciplinary. It also suggested that empirical future research in this field is carried out at national level, because Brazil can become a model for the use of technological resources in cities located in a developing country. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
