Abstract This paper aims to know and to discuss the positioning of the ICT industry in the smart cities scenario in Brazil. It is based on a qualitative research using primary data from a survey performed with executives from IBM, Cisco, Huawei, Oracle, SAP, Ericsson and Microsoft; and secondary data from documents websites of then. The results indicated these companies converge on the concept of smart cities and on the possibility of materialization of the concept in any type of city; they agreed that investments in state-of-the-art technologies to the detriment of technologies that are most needed for public management do not guarantee the existence of the smart city. Finally, they also converged on the need for training of public agents, the need to engage the population, respect and maintenance of the cultural and historical aspects of the city; the appetite for innovation and the positive aspects that the involvement of academia and private sector can bring success to the public sector.
