Abstract In today's world, the human population is growing by the day. As the population grows, so does the demand for technology. So, there is a necessity in implementing advanced technologies in cities to make a smart one. Smart city is the future of urbanization. Revolution in cities with digital technology provides sustainable and efficient life through smart city. For a smart city, a large network must be built and maintained involving devices, sensors and software. Technologies like machine learning, deep learning, internet of things and communication technologies are involved in implementing smart city. In this paper, various technologies used in smart cities are discussed and few applications such as smart transportation, smart communication technology, smart medicine, smart environment, smart waste management, smart water monitoring systems are summarized. By implementing these technologies in a city, we can transform it into a smart one, resulting in a balance between economic growth and population growth. These technologies help people to make their life smarter and easier and improves the quality of life. © 2021 IEEE.
