Abstract Growth in urbanization demands a healthier lifestyle in cities. Availability of technological advancements has guided the governments to plan for better facilities and services to be designated as a smart city. Strict environmental regulations in the recent past also led to augment civic amenities. A smart city optimizes city functions and boosts economic growth by focusing on data analysis with smart technologies. Characteristic values of a city get enhanced, how well they utilize technology. Few characteristics include technological infrastructure, environmental ingenuities, controlled public transport, and progressive plans. A smart city can assess information technologies to create, install, and endorse developmental practices to cater to challenges and join technologically enabled infrastructure. Smart cities use data connected through communication devices and exchange information. IoT devices use edge computing, delivering relevant and important information. Security is used to guard, monitor, and regulate smart city networks and blocks unlawful access to the network. Supportive technologies are AI, cloud computing, dashboards, ML, and mesh networks. Some of the uses are finding a parking space with digital payments and signal automation with collecting data from other crossings and traffic decongestion. Illumination of street lights gets adjusted as per traffic, helping in energy conservation and environmental efficiencies. Municipalities in smart cities use Internet-controlled rubbish collection, trash bin picking upon filling, and fleet management. Area prone to crime, droughts/floods, hurricanes, and landslides is equipped with sensors for early warnings. The research paper will explore all facilities supported by the latest technologies and their role in supporting the functioning of smart cities. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
