Abstract The concept of the smart city is becoming increasingly important in light of contemporary challenges related to sustainable development and efficient resource utilization. This study focuses on the contribution of integrating digital technologies into urban infrastructure, which is critical for ensuring the sustainable development of urban areas. While advanced cities like Copenhagen and Singapore demonstrate successes in implementing smart practices, Kazakhstan faces significant challenges in this domain. The aim of the research is to analyze the gaps in urban development and explore global practices that can be adapted to the Kazakh context. Utilizing the leapfrog development model, the study evaluates strategies for implementing smart technologies in Kazakh cities, emphasizing their potential to enhance ecological sustainability, energy efficiency, and rational resource use. The main findings indicate that technological innovations are key to improving the quality of life for residents and promoting sustainable urban development. The research offers practical recommendations for urban planners and policymakers, highlighting the importance of integrating smart technologies into sustainable development strategies, particularly in the context of developing countries such as Kazakhstan.
