Abstract Internet of Things represents a promising approach to improve the context awareness and smart interactions with surrounding environment. In this area, both wireless sensor networking and social networking paradigms are gaining momentum. These trends suggest a collaborative integration of sensor and social data, which result to be mutually compensatory in various data processing and analysis. This chapter, therefore, deals with mechanisms for an effective coordination to improve the quality of published information, with particular reference to the smart cities vision. In particular, the focus is on transportation management, where an integrated approach could be applicable to a large variety of urban scenarios, as it is flexible, reactive, and robust. In the following, a brief overview of the most suited enabling technologies is provided, together with addressing a practical case study to point out the advantages provided by the proposed approach. © 2014 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
